Guitar Restoration Part 1

So we begin the restoration of my sons guitar which he found in our neighbors bulk hard rubbish. He had been talking about owning an electric guitar for over 12 months, but being that he is only 6 years old and each week there is a new ‘special interest’, we decided it was too soon for such an instrument… However, the spirits of the guitar gods had other plans and decided to step in.

It was 7 January 2023 and you now have the origins of ‘Rocky’ the Guitar, so let me provide a list of the extensive issues facing us during this restoration:

  • Dents on body and neck

  • Chipped paint on body

  • Scratches on body, neck and headstock

  • Missing strap button

  • Missing 1st and 6th strings

  • Missing 6th string bridge saddles

  • Missing 6th string tuning peg and key

  • Rusted 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th strings

  • Rusted and corroded input jack

  • Rusted pickguard screws

  • Rusted string trees

  • Broken 3rd string tuning key

  • Broken single-coil pickup

  • Broken volume knob

  • Weather stained fretboard

  • Corroded frets

  • Additional strap button hole on end of knee rest

So now you can appreciate the work involved. My son is already attached to this instrument, so there is zero consideration or choice now, we must fix it!
